Today, many varieties of the blazer jacket and sport coats are available due to the way it enhances man’s look. Most men use the terms sport coat and blazers interchangeably. Let’s cover men’s blazer’s historical background. Blazers became a jacket of choice for the British navy in the early nineteenth century. British royalty gave its approval in 1837. Navy was the only color used at that time, and it was originally double-breasted with 6 buttons. The single-breasted blazer gained popularity later and was used mostly by rowing clubs in England. These jackets only had two buttons to allow rowers the freedom to move around without restriction.  2-Button Single-Breasted is the most common type of men’s blazer these days. If you decide to get one in foundation colors such as navy blue, you will own the most versatile piece of blazer. Taller men tend to enjoy 3-button single breasted blazers. To gain exclusivity, choose 6-button double-breasted blazer. It will work great for a formal event.

If you are looking for a way to pair up a blazer jacket with trousers, go for gray flannel trousers. It will look excellent when wearing a navy blue blazer. Likewise, or well-fitted khakis or classic light-colored chinos will be a less formal alternative. For a more informal outfit, jeans can be worn with a blazer.

The Sports Jacket

A while ago, men used to wear sport jacket paired with trousers of a different color for sporting activities, such as shooting, horseback riding, and hunting. As many men could only effort one suit, sport jacket was considered a luxury item. Over the past century, as clothing started to become more affordable, the sports jacket became a staple of casual and dapper style.

How does the sport jacket differ from a blazer? For once, sports coat is available in huge variety of colors and patterns. Generally, it has looser fit, and is structured slightly different than men’s blazer. A sports coat is crafted a little roomier than blazer or suit coat and allows to layer a sweater or vest underneath. It is also designed to give you a greater mobility. Sports jackets can most easily be identified by their use of thicker fabrics when compared to the suit jacket or blazer. Herringbone is the most commonly used fabric choice for the sport coat. Houndstooth is a crooked check made in a twill weave and usually of one light color and one dark. The name derives from the pattern’s resemblance to a canine tooth. The pattern occurs in glen plaid, Prince of Wales and other district checks. Sports coats in this fabric are made in dark grays, light grays, many shades of blue, browns, and tans. Both Houndstooth & Shepherd’s Check are busy patterns. These patterns are typically worn in Europe, England and United States. When it comes to flannel sport coats, they are different from blazers in a way that they use the mix of colors to create accents that bring out those same colors in a man’s shirt and accessories. Did I mention tweed? This is thick and rough weave. Tweed comes in a wide range of colors, which makes it a perfect fabric for the sports coat given. Different colored weaves are used to make some truly unique looks.

Blue jeans work very well with a sports jacket, especially if they are dark and fit well. This pairing is an equal balance of stylish and casual. To dress up a sports jacket, wear any odd trouser that doesn’t too closely resemble the jacket’s fabric.
